The collection that Sufjan dedicated to his birth state is composed as a geographical tone poem. The songs draw from personal anecdote, regional history, state heritage, Henry Ford, Detroit race riots and love. The music sounds like Arthur Lee meeting the 'Book Of Psalms', or as a transgressive majestic jam session between Stereolab and Luke Vibert, conducted by Steve Reich.
