Although Veloso had already been thrown injail once for his criticism of Brazil's militaryregime, he continued to speak out against it onCaetano Veloso (Irene), with tracks like"Irene", (about a machine gun-toting outlawcelebrated by the left). No wonder he would soonfind himself in political exile in the UK. Thegeneral tone of the album is in keeping with itsdire message and actually, Veloso felt it wasimportant for his voice of protest to be heardaround the world. If he was a high profilepublic figure, he felt that he would be safer.Despite all of this (or perhaps because of allthis) and the man still managed to makeexcellent records!
